Not to be pedantic, and fully granting how Colossians 1:24 was used in later theological tradition, what the text actually says is not that author of the epistle is striving to fill in what is lacking in Christ's own sufferings, but rather that he is striving to match in himself what he--the author--yet lacks of Christ's own sufferings. Mind you, there are different levels of meaning in the claim that there are different levels of meaning in the text.
