Perennialists and Digressers All,
Happy to pass along a recent presentation I did for the Latin Platonism Reading Group—made up of several members and alumni of the Fans of DBH Facebook page—on Philo of Alexandria and his background. I should have another Digression Alone sometime this month, and Digressions With Friends should tentatively resume in early April.
Εἰρήνη πᾶσι,
David
Hi David, just wondering whether you might be able to share sources (primary and/or secondary) regarding the different understandings of soul and spirit (wrt cosmology and anthropology in antiquity)? I have been intrigued and perplexed by this for a while, and, based upon the questions at the end of this lecture, it seems others are too.. hence why I thought I might ask!
I've read many snippets here and there in your essays, DBH's essays (e.g. https://churchlifejournal.nd.edu/articles/the-spiritual-was-more-substantial-than-the-material-for-the-ancients/) and the comments in his NT translation. I get the general gist, but would appreciate some further reading if you have any - or maybe a Digression on the topic? ;)
(I understand also that there were a variety of different understandings in antiquity, so maybe I'm looking for some simpler definitions where there are none to be found... So if it helps specify the question, I'm most interested in soul and spirit in the Apostle's anthropology and soteriology.)
Appreciate any thoughts!
